Evolve is Johnstown’s newest mat club for local wrestlers looking to accelerate their development as wrestlers and most importantly as young men. Whether you are new to the sport or have years of experience, there’s always room to grow and we will help you evolve into the wrestler you wish to become. We not only focus on development as wrestlers but more importantly as young men. Through our wrestling program our wrestlers develop important attributes such as self confidence, sportsmanship and discipline among others. We emphasize good moral values and ethics and will use the sport of wrestling to help develop great role models and young men. Each practice concludes with a brief life lesson including topics such as respecting others, support systems, responsibilities, behavior on and off the mat, self motivation, good hygiene, learning from mistakes and much more.
Classes are limited to 30 wresters ages 6 & up and include the Elementary, Junior High & Varsity Levels. No prior experience is necessary for the novice class.
You will want to accompany your wrestler inside for their first practice. You will need to fill out a basic liability waiver and registration form if you didn’t already register online. You’ll want to have your wrestler come dressed in gym attire and bring their wrestling shoes, headgear and a bottle of water. (If they don’t have shoes don’t worry. They can start in socks until you get a pair) If you have any questions before hand you can contact us now through the contact page.
Parents are asked to drop off their wrestlers 10 minutes before practice starts so that they may be geared up and ready to go at the start of class time. Be sure to pack their shoes, headgear & a bottle of water. We do not have a water fountain. If you forget water there is a Dollar Tree 2 spaces over that has drinks.
Evolve wrestlers are expected to maintain high standards in sportsmanship, citizenship and respect for people and property. They are expected to have good manners, a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic on and off the mat. Problems in any of these areas may result in loss of wrestling privileges, suspension, or expulsion for the club.
The nature of this sport with full body contact allows for the chance of skin complications such as ring worm. This is easily prevented by having your wrestler shower after every practice, match & tournament.
Parents are not permitted to be in the wrestling room during practices. The wrestlers are too distracted and do not perform or behave to their normal standards. There is a couch in the back room for parents that need to stay during practice.
When signing up for a tournament be sure to write “Evolve Mat Club” as your “school, team &/or club name” or an Evolve coach will not be able to assist your wrestler. No other coaches or parents may accompany the coach on the mat. Wrestlers should wear Evolve clothes and no other team. Please inform coach Cameron when you have signed up for a tournament under the Evolve team name. Include the age/weight details.
Matches / Scrimmages
Wrestlers on other teams must participate as an Evolve wrestler when competing against teams they are also a member of.

Wrestlers should come to practice wearing a T-shirt and gym shorts. You are to bring your wrestling shoes to change into(see below). You will also want to bring your headgear (see below) and a bottle of water.
Wrestlers should come to a tournament wearing their singlet underneath warm up clothes such as gym shorts and a T-shirt of sweat pants and shirt. Of course we recommend wearing Evolve Mat Club branded clothes. You are to bring your wrestling shoes to change into (see below). You will also want to bring your headgear (see below).
A singlet is the outfit a wrestler wears for their match. They are for tournaments only, not practice.
Wrestling shoes are designed differently from regular street shoes. It is highly recommended that you pick up a pair for your wrestler if they don’t already own a pair. They typically start around $25 and go up from there. You can even find pairs at thrift stores for roughly $5. We also usually have a few used pairs of shoes that you are more than welcome to look though at the club. Wrestling shoes are very important not just for wearing but to help with the sanitation of the mat. Wrestlers roll all around on the mat and it is very important to only have shoes with clean bottoms be on the mat. That is why wrestlers are to bring their shoes to practice to change into and never wear them there.
Headgear is protective equipment designed to protect your wrestlers ears. Constant rubbing of your cartilage on the mat can lead to issues such as cauliflower ear. Although headgear is not required, it is suggested. Headgear starts at around $20 if you wish to pick up a pair of your own. You can even find pairs at thrift stores for roughly $3. We usually have a few used pairs at the club also. So you are more than welcome to look through what we have.
A tournament is typically an all day event. Your wrestler will compete in an elimination bracket style system. Most are set up as “double elimination” where it takes two losses to eliminate you from the tournament. A single elimination tournament simply means one loss and you are out.
